I learned about “The Great Lie” when Daniel Quinn linked to it from ishmael.com. It doesn’t carry a credit, but it’s got lines lifted straight from Quinn’s corpus. Sometimes cheesy, sometimes ham-handed, “The Great Lie” is nonetheless about as effective an introduction as half an hour can provide, and a clear illustration of the contention I’ve made that Taylor’s so often objected to, that pretty much everyone in civilization ranges from hating civilization passionately, to tolerating the civilized aspects of their life as the “necessary evil” paid for the uncivilized aspects of their life that they dearly love.
